GBPUSD was flat last week and remains trading near the 1.2500 level.
There was no significant data from the UK last week. The market was slightly relieved when UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was released from the hospital and returned to the Prime Minister’s residence, where he is currently being quarantined. The GBP strengthened in the first 2 days of last week following the weakening of the Dollar and rose to 1.2645 before the Dollar re-strengthened in the following 3 days and plunged to a low of 1.2406 before rising to 1.2500.
There is some key economic data this week, including employment and retail sales data. This may impact British Pound movement this week.
Technical Analysis
- GBPUSD traded slightly higher last week and closed at 1.2492.
- The weekly candlestick shape shows an inverted hammer (shooting star).
- The movement failed in an attempt to close the weekly price above the 61.8% retracement at 1.2515. This level is now a strong Resistance area. The next Resistance is at 1.2645 (highest last week).
- Meanwhile the Support level is at 1.2406 (lowest last week) followed by Support at 38.2% at 1.2093 and at 1.2162.
- The MACD D1 indicator shows that the signal line is now close to 0 and the histogram is also small and horizontal. This indicates that the currency pair is likely to go through a consolidation or sideway phase.
